Skirmishers

Skirmishers
Loads of skirmishers including a unit (at the front) armed with bows, based for Dux Bellorum.

Picts

Awaiting basing Picts!
Picts
Still on the old style (at least for me!) square bases, these Picts (Gripping Beast).
Once on their new 1p's it will be easy to use them as Shieldwall or Warrior (for Dux Bellorum) depending on what I want to do.
As they stand they are enough for one shieldwall unit (remove the rear rank) or two warriors.

Characters

I use these figures to represent the Leadership points used in Dux Bellorum.
Various characters
The chaps on the base are only on it for ease of moving it is not a formation.

Saxon Shieldwall

Again, these could be used for quite a few different armies.
A Saxon Shieldwall unit
These are based for Dux Bellorum (16cm wide unit frontage). Since they are on 1p's held in place with magnets it would be easy to switch them out to a more open base style to represent other units.

Gripping Beast figures.
.

Both Shieldwall units

Dark Age Cavalry

For now this is all my early Dark Age cavalry which is painted.
Suspiciously regimented Dark Age cavalry
The bases need changing to my new style of cavalry base but are serviceable for now. The new style uses four 2p's (more to follow).
These chaps are armoured (for the most part).
I need to get the unarmoured figures I've got painted up to support them.

Religious Stuff

Dux Bellorum has an option for 'Religious Stuff', Monks!
These are work in progress of my two bases for the 'Monks' option in Dux. One is a Pagan scene, with sacrificial sheep and the other a travelling cart with priest for the more Christian themed armies. The Christian bases is the correct size for Dux but the Pagan one is, obviously, far to short and will need some sort of house rule.
The figures are all Irregular Miniatures.

Saxon Warriors

To be honest, these would probably work for any dark age warriors.
Saxon Warriors
The front unit are Noble Warriors, as indicated by the heavier armour they are wearing. The rear two units are straight forward Warriors with only helmets and Shields.

Once again these are based for Dux Bellorum but this time on Warbases irregular shaped bases to reflect the fact that in Dux these guys fight in a much looser formation. The overall frontage is around 16cm so it fits in nicely with the Shieldwall units. These are Gripping Beast figures.

Romano British Infantry

Finally got round to posting my Romano British Infantry
Romano British Infantry

They are based for Dux Bellorum. Well, my version of Dux Bellorum. I've doubled the size of the standard base (as suggested as an option in the rules) and added one so each infantry unit is 16cm wide. This gives the slightly odd number of seven figures wide but allows my cavalry to have six figures across each base.
Each figure is based on a 1p piece and fits into a WarBases base. The figures are, of course, Gripping Beast.
Here you can see two shieldwall units.

Slingers

Dark Age Slingers

These are made from the Gripping Beast Dark Age Warriors boxed set. You can make about half the figures with slings but I've just assembled six to see how they look.

Dark Age Warriors

Dark Age Warriors

Some of the Gripping Beasts Dark Age Warriors. These are ment to represent any poorly armed, quickly raised group of warriors in the Dark Ages and do a great job (IMHO). I bought a box of these at Salute 2013 and quickly painted some of them up. This is a unit of 20 spearmen with a a few extras for the next unit!
Fabulous figures, very easy to make up and paint. As always (well from now on) these are bases on UK 1p's then placed in a Warbases base. I added some 3mm Rare Earth magnets to the base to keep the figures in place.
I liked these so much I picked up two extra boxes at Phalanx so I can add more of these generic infantry to my Dark Age armies.
4 Dux Bellorum units worth of Warriors
And here are those warriors painted up and ready to go.

Normans

Most of the figures are Gripping Beast with a few Crusader.

Mounted Knights (Milites)

10 Mounted Milites including their Count (fourth from right). Mounted on a base that needs opening up a bit so all the figs sit properly.

Pueri
10 Pueri used as light cavalry.

Dismounted Knights (Milites) Unit 1

16 to 20 Milites with Heavy Armour. The top picture shows all 20 figures the base will accomodate. The bottom picture has the base with 16 figures and a blank to cover the empty spaces. To be honest the group of 20 has drafted in a couple of sword armed figures and an unarmoured figure!

Dismounted Knights (Milites) Unit 2

18 Dismounted Milites with Light Armour (Padded). No base for this lot yet. In front of them is a casualty figure (not sure what I am going to use this for yet). These figures are by Crusader.

Liberi

16 Freemen armed with spears. I've given them the same shield pattern as I envisage them as being raised and armed by their Lord. You will notice a blanking piece on the base so that I can add and extra four figures when I get them.

Coloni

These 8 figures are armed with bows.

Serjeants
8 Serjeants armed with Crossbows. Half the figures have armour, half do not. I plan to designate if the unit has armour before a game.

Vikings
7 Viking Warriors used as mercenaries.

Civilians and Cattle

These are my Dark Age Civilians, all Gripping Beast Figures.
A warrior monk leads a group of civilians to safety.
Two house wives look on as a farmer pens his pigs.
More villiagers rush out alerted by the noise.

The Sheep.

Late Saxons

These are my late period Saxons.

All this page was imported from my old web site so the pictures need updating to allow them to enlarge.

View of Centre

View of Armies Right (note javlin armed skirmishers)

All these figures are mounted on Games Workshop 20mm (unless otherwize noted) bases with magnetic strips on the bottom. The movement trays have green steel pager on them to hold the figures in place.

They were painted with flat colours then Army Dip (from Warlord Games) PAINTED onto everything apart from flesh (which is GW elf flash with Flesh wash and a final highlight of elf flesh). A final coat of Army Painter Dull tone took the shine off.

Characters

Harold (Cyning) in conversation with his advisors

I plan to count this as one model.

Army Standard Bearer

Again count this as one model.

Warriors

16 Huscarls

The larger than needed movement tray is to allow an extra 4 Huscarls to be added. I've given them a blue theme (probably too much but it does help to identify them!).

1st mixed unit of 10 Thegns and 20 Ceorls

Once again a much larger than needed movement tray to allow for further troops and a (slight) change of formation.

2nd mixed unit of 10 Thegns and 20 Ceorls

Early Saxons

These 20 early Saxons have the smaller buckler shield. In fact their are actually 21 figs in the picture but one (front right) is actually a Pict! The shields are actually pinned on with a touch of blu tac around the pin. That way I can replace the shield with larger one if I want to represent a later unit.

9 Mounted Thegns

These are Crusader Miniatures. I added them to give the army a bit of mobility.

22 Gebur Slingers

Not sure who made these figures, found them at the bottom of my figures box. Since I figured they would be the poorest of the poor have tried to give them a ragged appearence. Based on 25mm bases.

5 Gebur Bowmen

I painted these while 'on a roll' although they are not that brilliant figures (ugly faces on two of em) and yes the guy on the left is armed with a sling!

11 Gebur Javelin armed skirmishers

Same source as the slingers. The javelins are wire with hammered heads.

6 Geburs Spear

Spear armed Geburs for the bottom of the box again. There are more of these but I've mislaid them!

Celt figures

Here are the first pictures of my new Celts. These are the Warlord plastics, painted using their Magic Dip.
